The Watertown Area Community Foundation (WACF) and KXLG Radio have partnered to bring a new nonprofit marketing program, Local Roots – Growing Awareness & Connecting Community, to area nonprofits.
“An important part of our mission at the Foundation is to strengthen connections between our nonprofit organizations and our community members,” shared WACF Communications Director Kristen Henderson. “Our goal with Local Roots is to do just that – provide more opportunities for our nonprofits to share their story with our community. These organizations do so much to create a safe, healthy, and vibrant Watertown for us all.”
Each month, one area nonprofit will be selected for Local Roots. The program is complimentary. To be eligible, area nonprofits must have received funding from the Foundation in 2023 or 2024.
This idea for Local Roots was sparked during a conversation between Henderson and KXLG Radio Station Owner Melissa Herrboldt on a drive to Hamlin Learning Center to present a KXLG scholarship this spring.
“Melissa shared she and her team were on a mission to put more positivity into our community. The KXLG team had ideas in the hopper, but nothing quite ready for prime time. Still, her enthusiasm told me it was going to happen,” said Henderson. “The next day at the office, it struck me to combine Melissa’s mission for KXLG and the Foundation’s mission. Let’s put positivity in the world by sharing more about all the good our local nonprofits do.”
A few brainstorming sessions later Local Roots was born. Organizations selected for Local Roots receive 56 radio ads, three live interviews, two social media posts, and a spotlight in the WACF newsletter.
“The Foundation has always been good to share with our listeners the importance of our area nonprofits,” said Herrboldt. “Local Roots expands their efforts. Now for an entire month, we will spotlight an organization, learn about its mission, and hear stories from its volunteers and the people they serve. By knowing more, we can all do more for our community and that’s certainly worth sharing.”
