Over 55,000 guests visit Watertown’s Bramble Park Zoo annually and soon zoo visitors will have the opportunity to come face-to-face with a wolf pack, thankfully through a very thick window.
The Watertown Area Community Foundation (WACF) recently awarded the Lake Area Zoological Society a $60,000 grant to modernize the wolf exhibit at the Bramble Park Zoo.
The existing habitat is over 35 years old and out of date with current zoological standards. As part of the $600,000 renovation, a large viewing window will be added to facilitate educating visitors on the myths and roles of wolves in our environment. Additionally, a pool will be added to improve the habitat for the animals, especially during the warm summer months. Finally, features like running water, heat, and added square footage will assist zookeepers and veterinary staff with daily husbandry tasks.
“When the project is complete, the wolves will come into holding regularly, which will allow us to better care for them and increase the safety of the habitat,” said Lake Area Zoological Society President Dr. Andrea Hennen. “The renovated exhibit will also allow the pack more enrichment opportunities enhancing their welfare and allowing observers a better appreciation for these large carnivores.”
The mission of the Lake Area Zoological Society is to promote and stimulate interest in the Bramble Park Zoo and support the zoo’s development and programs through fundraising, marketing, and other initiatives designed to enhance the zoo experience.
“The work of the Lake Area Zoological Society (LAZS) ensures that our community has a fun, enriching, safe, and thriving zoo for patrons, animals, and staff members alike,” shared WACF Executive Director Cammie Mengwasser. “It is imperative to support a vibrant zoo for all to continue to enjoy.”
LAZS and the Foundation have been partners since 1981 when the Foundation awarded a $6,800 grant for zoo exhibits. Since that time, the Lake Area Zoological Society has received over $700,000 in grants from the Watertown Area Community Foundation including a multi-year $150,000 grant for “Ottertown” which opened in 2015.
